"Seniority is defined as the number of years of continuous service for the diocese in a geographic school system, within the elementary and secondary systems and in a specific field. Teachers must also have earned a religion certification by taking six theology courses from the diocese, completed a state certification with three years of teaching and obtained a pastor’s letter confirming the teacher is an appropriate representative of his/her faith."

"Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President William George described the firing of Scranton Diocese Association of Catholic Teachers President Michael Milz for his union activism and support for collective bargaining for Teachers as the most outrageous, shameful and un-American act by the Scranton Diocese, headed by Bishop Joseph Martino."

Almost Class of 2008

The Seton Catholic High School
Webmasters Note: The Seton Catholic High School Class of 2008 held a special "graduation" Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church on WIlliam Street in Pittston, PA on June 8, 2008. From what we heard it was wonderful and kept these kids together, at least one more time, more than just "in spirit".
According to Father Hugh there "was not a dry eye in the Church" during the Mass which the students planned themselves.
CONGRATULATIONS to the SETON CATHOLIC CLASS OF 2008
MARCH 2007: Seton Catholic High School, Pittston The Seton Catholic High School Junior class already had their class rings and were busy planning for their happy senior year when the extremely expensive "Meitler Study", commissioned by Bishop Martino, reported it's "findings". Midway through their Junior year, Bishop Joseph F. Martino of the Diocese of Scranton made the final decision to close Seton Catholic in June of 2007. A lot of hearts were broken that day, and continue to be broken. Seton Catholic/St. John the Evangelist High School can NEVER be replaced, and there is STILL a need for a Cathoic High School in the Pittston Area School District. As you can imagine, this was devastating news to the kids who had spent three years together and were anticipating the biggest year of all: Senior Year.
The family of students which made up the Seton Catholic Class of 2008 is scattered among various schools within and outside of the Pittston Area School District and beyond: Bishop Hoban/Holy Redeemer in Wilkes-Barre; Scranton Prep; Wyoming Area High School (Exeter PA),Pittston Area High School in Yateville PA and the soon to be closed

Still, we know these kids are together in spirit, along with the Freshmen and Sophomores who would have comprised the classes of 2009 and 2010. These are young people. We understand their wounds will heal and they will move on successfully. Still, the scar of separation will always remain. This week we dedicate our site to the Seton Catholic "Almost" Class of 2008. Here is a photo page from the 2005 - 2006 & 2006 - 2007 school years at Seton Catholic High School |
