ANNOUNCEMENTS

Judge Gailey C. Keller's Decision

LAWSUIT UPDATE:On June 15th, 2004, we received Judge Gailey C. Keller's decision. Based on the 1st Amendment's separation of Church and State, Judge Keller wrote the following:

Judge Keller Dismisses Petition for Injunction

The decision to dismiss the lawsuit, citing the 1st Amentment separation of Church and state, blocked parents' efforts to keep Saint John the Baptist School in Pittston opened for one more year, due to contractual agreements. The school was closed on June 4, 2004 with 161 students enrolled.

Also, in his testimony of June 7, Msgr. Patrick Practico, Vicar General of the Diocese of Scranton, stated that this issue could have been resolved within a Church tribunal. None of us had ever heard this offer before, and, from what we know, none of us ever heard of Msgr. Practico.

It should be noted that no offer or correspondence from Msgr. Practico or any other Diocese of Scranton official ever mentioned this option of a Church hearing to us prior to June 7, 2004 - the hearing in the Luzerne County Court House.

SJB Family Picnic was held June 1, 2004 - "SJB FOREVER"
Buckets of rain at 4 PM and even some hail-balls couldn't put a damper on the SJB SPIRIT. With the help of some quickly but sincerely offered prayers and the Blessed Mother (via Mrs. Allardyce's statue-in-the-window), the downpour subsided and the family picnic when on as planned.

Any sadness over the Diocese's plan to close SJB was put aside as our children - as well as parents, grandparents, and friends - enjoyed the games, food, music (thank you Scott Stevens), and more for the first three hours. "Mr. K" was presented with a special gift in thanksgiving for his 33 years of caring, service and unending dedication to Saint John the Baptist Elementary School. Robert Kaluzavich has spent nearly 41 of his 50some years at St. John the Baptist School in Pittston. During that time, Robert Kaluzavich has been a student, teacher, coach and, for the past 14 years, the beloved principal of our beloved school.

At 7PM, everyone moved to the cafeteria. For nearly 45 minutes, the crowd enjoyed the slide show which Al Fereck had lovingly prepared as a lasting tribute to the school we all know and will forever love. There was also a wonderfully written dialogue to accompany the slide presentation, which was read by _______________ (sorry!! didn't catch the name. The SJB student did a great job, and we will give proper credit later.)

The family picnic was planned by a special committee of parents under the supervision of the St. John the Baptist Parents Guild Association. The theme of the picnic was SJB Forever. One Scranton newspaper carried the headline the other day "Saint John the Baptist Students Bid Farewell". However, no one will ever truly say good-bye to this beloved school. No matter what happens, many of us will meet again at Seton Catholic and ALL of us will forever keep the SJB SPIRIT alive in our hearts.

Words are not enough to thank all of you who worked for so many hours in planning, setting up and carrying through on this wonderful way to end our school year in a memorable and fun way. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the families, students and faculty and staff of SJB for your thoughtfulness.

Most importantly, we haven't seen the children of SJB acting in such a carefree manner the announcement of March 26th. We are sure the SJB Family Picnic Planning Committee will agree that all the work was well worth it!

(Because this reporting webmaster arrived at the party a little later than most, some details may be omitted but will be filled in later.)
