Catholic School Enrollment
Diocese of Scranton Catholic Schools

Please Note LYCOMING COUNTY'S ENROLLMENT
Bishop Martino told one caller on Ask the Bishop, Live that even $1Million dollars would not help Pittston schools.

However, MONEY sure seems to have helped Lycoming schools when Clarence Eck donated $2Million dollars on April 22nd! Look at their enrollment in the Williamsport/Lycoming county schools

These statistics were taken from the Diocese of Scranton Catholic Schools Directory on May 16, 2004.

SJB and SMA Enrollment:

St. John the Baptist School Enrollment = 161*
St. Mary's, Avoca Enrollment = 127

*SJB's enrollment on the Diocese of Scranton site previously stated over 200..
This past 2 years, especially last year, St. John the Baptist lost a number of students amidst rumors that schools were closing in Pittston. In some cases, whole families of 3 children pulled out...
SJB's enrollment has been adjusted by the Diocese since the school closing announcement..no other schools' enrollments were adjusted to the best of our knowledge.

One has to wonder WHY our schools were targeted?? What is the justification?

IMPORTANT!
PLEASE READ BEFORE LOOKING AT ENROLLMENT FIGURES!!

Bear in mind that, except for Region 7, the following enrollment figures were taken from the Diocese of Scranton Catholic Schools site and are, very likely, much lower than listed, as they have NOT been updated in some time.
Only REGION 7/Pittston schools are accurate, as the Diocese of Scranton specifically updated Region 7's enrollment stats as of April as part of their "Plan".

Ironically, the only enrollment figures which HAVE NOT gone down, according to the Diocese's figures, are St. John the Baptist's in Pittston.
It is or opinion that in their haste to illustrate to the public that SJB needed to close, someone from the Diocese of Scranton went in and edited SJB's enrollment figures from 2002's listing of 200+ to the current 161 at some point between March 27th and now.

God Bless Clarence Eck.
We are happy for Williamsport, and don't want them to close. However, the fact that these schools are open is further testimony to our belief that, for some reason, Bishop Martino wants SJB and SMA closed - NO MATTER WHAT!

**St. Mary's Assumption reports that their current enrollment, including PRE-K and, presumably, new enrollment from school closings, is 247. The figure of 196 was taken from DioceseofScranton.org and did not, it appears, include PreK. (First set of enrollment figures: after entering D od Site, click "Educaton" - "School directory" - "Luzerne".)

Below is the actual chart featured on the Diocese of Scranton site for
"Current Enrollment" on their information page on the school closings.

Notice that enrollment figures are different from what is currently featured on their unedited School Directory Page
The only enrollment figures which were adjusted between the two charts were those for SJB.
Until very recently, the enrollment for SJB on the School Directory Page was over 200, which is what SJB's enrollment was until the "school closing" rumors started about 1 1/2 years ago.

This chart is entitled "Enrollment Trends".

The figures on this chart differ, except for SJB from the "Current Enrollment" chart on the Diocese of Scranton's "School Closings" page, and also, somewhat, from the School Directory Page found on their regular pages.

What A Merger Could Have Done...

Finally, here is what a merger could have done: saved TWO schools and up to 118 students who left Catholic education because of Bishop Martino's "Plan":

7th and 8th grades could have gone over to Seton, thereby ensuring the future of Seton Catholic High School.

4th and 6th grades could have been split into two separate classes, thereby keeping two more teachers who lost their jobs.

No child would have to have been separated from friends or siblings.

Other schools would not have been disrupted.

Everyone would have been happy...except Bishop Martino.

a merger between St. John the Baptist, Pittston, and St. Mary's, Avoca, would have saved up to 118 students lost to Catholic education.

FINAL NOTE

St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Pittston (1917- June 4,2004) and Saint Mary's Grade School in Avoca, PA (1919 - June 4,2004), closed on June 4, 2004 despite a long battle, which included a lawsuit filed by parents of SJB, to keep them opened.
Many of the students' parents have, as a result of their disillusionment with Bishop Joseph F. Martino, the Diocese of Scranton, and the Catholic Schools office, enrolled the children in public school.
