Seton Catholic High School - Pittston, PA

NEWSFLASH!- December 18, 2007: Holy Rosary School in Duryea TEMPORARILY closed last week until a broken boiler could be repaired or replaced.

Well, last night we learned that - until late January - Holy Rosary will be moved to Seton Catholic High School in Pittston! Why are we so excited? We are sad that Holy Rosary has such woes - we LOVE that school. But to think that the children there who wanted to attend Seton will now realize their dream in a small way - well! What can we say?

Have a great time, kids, at Seton Catholic in Pittston!

UPDATED: September 25, 2007

As most know, we all lost the battle to keep our very much loved and NEEDED Catholic high school in Pittston opened. However, the Seton Catholic High School building, which the Diocese of Scranton reportedly planned to turn into yet another real estate investment, will remain as a haven for our children's religious education in the evening and on weekends. This is because our longtime and very hardworking pastor, Monsignor Bendik, strongly recommended keeping the building for our children. Who knows what will happen if and when Msgr. ever leaves us for another assignment.

The "game plan" was to turn the Seton Catholic High School building into another elderly apartment building like the mysterious Lincoln Heights Apartments in Pittston, which are right up the street from Seton Catholic's building. We say "mysterious" because NO one seems to know the real names behind the corporate ownership of this building.

If you are a graduate of St. John the Evangelist, Seton Catholic, Pittston Central Academy and want to send us an e-mail to Webmaster@LeaveNoCatholicStudentBehind.com or link below) with contact information, please feel free to do so. We cannot promise anything, but perhaps in the future we will have time to make a special page for each and every graduating year.

In the meantime, feel free to check back often on our main page (link at bottom) to see if we've heard any Class or Alumni news such as reunion announcements, etc.

Thank you for all the past support. There are many Seton photos still available here thru the various links. Enjoy!

Thank you and God bless us all - Webmaster M

Please place Seton Catholin High School in Pittston closed "for good" by order of Bishop Joseph F. Martino in early June 2007.The following was told to us about the last day of school for the Seton Catholic Almost Class of 2008...

A tailgate party planned since March to ease the pain of separation and celebrate friendship...

A party planned since by the class of 2008 for the last day of school was nixed by two school officials. The press had begun to gather at Seton Catholic, and the students were herded back into the school. If given permission, I will print more on this page...here is part of what we were told by a student...

"Our class was outraged that people would do such a thing to our class on the last day ever. _______ and ________(two students were kicked out and allowed back in) in the end, were allowed back in the school. After our prayer service, we all gathered around for one final time, and said the "Our Father." After that, we all had our final farewells. I said good bye to my class for the last time, and we all parted back to the gym. When we got back to the gym, we were ordered to leave the proprerty. So we did, and we continued our party at our classmate's house, which lasted all night. "

Seton Catholic High School, Pittston, and its "feeder schools" Catholic elementary schools in the Pittston area), Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Dupont; Holy Rosary School, Duryea; Wyoming Area Catholic, Exeter and St. Mary's Assumption School, Pittston, make up the group of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Scranton called the Region 7, or R7, schools.
Seton Catholic High School, was established over 140 years ago by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), and has continued a tradition of outstanding Catholic education since that time:

"Seton Catholic High School, located in the heart of Pittston, PA, is proud to claim a rich and illustrious history. Picture this, Pittston, PA, the year is 1864. Five women religious, all Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, travel by stagecoach from Philadelphia to Pittston to establish St. John's Academy. From 1864 to 1881 this was the only school in the Greater Pittston Area that served the Catholic population. In 1881, the parochial school plan emerged and the academy now became known as St. John's Parochial School. Because of the generosity of the people of St. John the Evangelist Parish, the new free school building began construction in 1881."
