Service Assembly Recently Conducted
On Tuesday, September 13, 2005, the theology department at Seton Catholic High School hosted a Service Assembly.
The Service Assembly began with a scripture service and then students had the opportunity to hear from a number of area agency representatives concerning opportunities for volunteering their time and talents. As part of each student’s yearly requirements, the underclassmen must perform twenty hours of service, while seniors perform forty hours. Students are encouraged to go beyond the normal school and parish boundaries and look to where they may best put their faith into action.
Nine area agencies were represented at the assembly. Linda Kohut, representative of the Senior Citizens Centers in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties; Kim Hoge, chief of volunteer services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center; Anne Marie McCawley, administrator of the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen; Maureen Jordan, coordinator of Volunteer Action Center of the United Way; Melissa Zelinski, volunteer coordinator of Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice; Kate Winkler, volunteer coordinator for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bridge; Betty Caffrey, coordinator of the Wilkes-Barre Pro Life Center of Pennsylvanians for Human Life; Melissa Jones from the Pittston Public Library; and Joanne Stephens from Walsh Manor, a service center provided by St. Joseph’s Center all gave brief presentations on the service opportunities available for the students.
Mr. James Redington, principal at Seton Catholic High School, closed the assembly by reminding the students of the goal for this school year. “. Time is valuable and time should be well spent. Today you have heard of very real and practical ways that you can live and learn in the Spirit of Jesus.” Rev. Mr. Robert Roman serves as the chair of the theology department at Seton Catholic High School.
Pittston's Seton Catholic High School Celebrates the Arts:
Mr. James Kupetz and fourteen students from Seton Catholic High School participated in two weeks of service in Summer Splash: A Celebration of the Arts.
Now in its ninth year, Summer Splash brings the arts to nearly 200 children in the Scranton area. The program is sponsored by Collaborative Ministry, an organization of women religious in the Diocese of Scranton who seek creative solutions to issues of social concern. The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, administer the sites. Summer Splash serves children in three sites: Valley View Terrace in South Scranton, Village Park Apartments in North Scranton and Lackawanna College in central city. Local artists and educators teach a variety of arts, including dance, drawing, crafts, photography, drama, music and sports. These learning experiences enhance children’s self-esteem, provide constructive play, foster meaningful relationships and encourage creative self-_expression.
Kupetz and the Seton students volunteered at the Village Park site. They joined together with students from other Catholic high schools. When asked about the service project, Sister Susan Hadzima, IHM, program director responded, “Summer Splash again gave testimony to the fact that dedicated people who care deeply about children can make a difference in their lives.”

In his homily, Maloney urged the students and faculty, “through the experiences of prayer, liturgy, reconciliation, study, and service to bring into being this new school year. Together we will gain the knowledge and comprehension of what it means to live and learn in the Spirit of Jesus.” The members of the student council served as readers, gift bearers and altar servers. John Jurosky is the president of the Student Council and Sister Claire Marie Kulp, IHM serves as its moderator. Music for the Liturgy was under the direction of Mr. David Baloga, chairperson of the music department. Senior Samantha Coassolo served as the leader of song. Rev. David Baloga joins the faculty as music teacher and director of liturgical music. Baloga, a graduate of the University of Scranton, serves as the director of liturgy at St. Joseph’s, Minooka. An avid supporter of the theatre, Baloga is presently preparing for the role of Albert Peterson in The Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre production of Bye Bye Birdie. He has most recently starred in The Music Box productions of Evita and Children of Eden. He also participated in Sweet Charity’s production of Godspell. Baloga resides in Kingston.

Seton Catholic has been undergoing renovations all summer.
The Seton Catholic renovations, primarily in the computer lab area, were made possible by a generous donation from a prominent Pittston area family, the Insalacos. We hope that alumni from all points of the U.S. and the world, and area residents who care about Catholic education, will follow the example of this family and find it in their hearts to contribute to the Seton Catholic Improvement Fund. There are so many thousands of graduates who left the halls of Seton Catholic/St. John the Evangelist High School fully prepared academically, spiritually, and emotionally to face the world and be a success in whatever way you can define that elusive term.
Seton Catholic may not be the fanciest school in structure or material items. But the teachers are dedicated to not only giving the finest education possible to all students, but in fostering something more important- a love of God and a love of fellow human beings. Prayer is central to the Seton curriculum- along with a solid education in computers, math, science and the arts.
Going to a public school is fine if that is your choice. But fancy buildings and well-paid teachers do NOT guarantee academic excellence. The recent release of SAT scores of dozens of schools in our region indicated clearly that private school students did much better in SAT scores than public schools. This was also true when Pittston Area SAT scores were compared to Seton Catholic scores. Pittston Area's scores were significantly lower.
In an article which ran on January 2, 2004 in the Citizens' Voice, Benjamin Shoval, speaking about the unfairness of our "skewed property tax system", stated "the average SAT score in Luzerne County is 964", which is 33 points below the national average. "Pittston Area delivered only a 903, a full 78 points below the norm." On another list, published in June of this year, Pittston Area SAT scores were dead last of approximately 34 schools from the Hazleton area to past Clarks Summit, PA. Pittston Area School teachers are, when adjusted for area and state income, among the highest paid teachers in the entire nation- averaging over $54,000+ in salary.
So, obviously, highly paid teachers and fancy bathrooms do NOT a great school make. We hope, when you are choosing a high school for your children, that you will consider choosing Seton Catholic High School in Pittston. You will not only be providing your child with a fine education where individual attention and love of God are what matters- and not state-of-the-art rest rooms that raise our taxes!
