Our mission is to serve the Catholic Schools and the children, parents, supporters and teachers who love them.
Catholic schools are closing at a time when the need for Catholic education is greatest, not just on a spirutual level, but on a LOCAL level!

If you live in the Pittston Area School District, and your child goes to Holy Redeemer, the ONLY Catholic High School available (between Hazleton and Scranton), can you afford the GAS, in addition to the increased TUITION, to drive them to Scranton or Wilkes-Barre for after-school & weekend practices, sports and actitivies?
Is there room for ALL the children to participate in the extras at these LARGER regional schools?

"It’s kind of upsetting and depressing...THEY don't really give us much choice,” junior Riley Marcks said as she walked out of school. “We have nothing to do with it. I really wish we had a say.”

Student William Beichler, who commutes from Factoryville to Scranton with his father who is a teacher in Scranton, must now find a ride to the Dunmore campus...

These are just two students, there are others who are upset.
God help these kids...

: Catholic School Closings Touch All

by Patrice O'Shaugnessey

  • 1,267 Catholic Schools CLOSED since 2000
  • Over 382,000 STUDENTS Effected
  • Mostly ELEMENTARY schools were closed....
  • As Catholics, don't we have a DUTY to turn this around?

The recently released report, "Who Will Save America's Urban Catholic Schools?" (from the THOMAS B. FORDHAM INSTITUTE) was released just before the arrival of Pope Benedict. Thus, it went largely unnoticed. But the impact of 1,267 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CLOSINGS (382,125 students) between 2000 - 2008 cannot go unnoticed.

According to the National Catholic Educational Association, between the 2000 and 2008 school years, there were 1,267 schools that closed. The number of students declined by 382,125. The most seriously affected have been elementary schools.

Former Bishop John O’Connor, later John Cardinal O'Connor of New York City, supported Catholic Teachers...
Bishop O'Connor of Scranton asked what he could do to help Catholic teachers in 1978.
The union asked him to put a policy in place. The result was Diocesan School Policy No. 417 of 1984. It states, in part:

“Catholic social teaching strongly supports the rights of lay teachers to organize and to bargain collectively.

A corollary of the right of lay teachers to organize is the right which they possess to determine the agency or organization which is to represent them in the collective bargaining process.”
- Bishop John O'Connor, later known as John Cardinal O'Connor

2004: Bishop Martino asks us to trust him....

  • Most offensive was this statement by Bishop Martino (May 12, 2004 LIVE broadcast):
"Do you really expect me to tell you on the air that your priests are liars?"
  • "But I do believe in time, when we see the health of the four schools that are there (remaining in the Pittston area), and that Catholic education is blossoming anew because of this change, then I think that you will understand the analogy that I made earlier. That, sometimes, there are growth pains in life, but they are pain, but they're growth pains not death pains. And we hope that, eh, I hope that you will forgive me for any pain that I may have caused you. But that was not what I intended to do."
Bishop Martino, Ask the Bishop May 2004, regarding his decision to close St. John Baptist School Pittston and St. Mary's Avoca
  • "So we now have a new and healthy situation. And, I'm very, I shouldn't say seven - six schools. That's Region 7 (Pittston area). Uh, we're hoping now to have four very healthy schools that will care for the students..."
    - Bishop Joseph F. Martino, Ask The Bishop Live ( May 2004 ) defending his decision to close St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Pittston and St. Mary's School in Avoca - the two MAIN FEEDER SCHOOLS FOR THE NOW CLOSED SETON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL in Pittston PA
  • "I must tell you, Mary, one of the, uh, problems I've had is, uh, since I've come here to this diocese is that thee power of the rumor is very powerful here in Northeast Pennsylvania. People will tell you that something is so because they heard it. Simply that way..."
April 2004 ASK THE BISHOPBishop Martino, if you KNEW the power of the rumor, why did you do NOTHING to stop the rumors about SETON CATHOLIC's closing which began with YOUR arrival in the Diocese of Scranton?

Bishop Martino, we TRIED to believe you BUT....
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HEALTHY PITTSTON AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM YOU PREDICTED?
  • "But, um, I've got to face God someday. And that's what I fear most of all- that Jesus will say to me, "You were content to be comfortable, Joe Martino, and, instead, uh, instead, uh, of taking it on the chin you, uh, you, uh, just remained comfortable and you can't expect Me to reward you for that."
Bishop Martino - Ask the Bishop - May 2004 - regarding the repercussions after his "hard" decision to close SJB and SMA - the two main FEEDER schools of the now CLOSED Seton Catholic in Pittston.
The Bishop has artfully avoided answering to the common people, and continues to mostly hide in his ivory tower in Scranton.
Who REALLY took it on the chin?
    THE CHILDREN!

Parents BEGGED Bishop Martino to heed their plea for Seton Catholic's future...

    • "Expecting us (the parents of St. John the Baptist Pittston and St. Mary's Avoca students) to save Seton after you send 214 more students to public school is akin to amputating a person’s right arm and then saying it’s up to him whether or not he learns to drive again."

PARENTS in a desperate Letter to Bishop Martino 2004 BEGGING him to reconsider and explaining - with statistical data back-up and a viable ALTERNATIVE PLAN - why HIS plan will DESTROY SETON CATHOLIC in PITTSTON...the parents were CORRECT.

But Bishop Joseph F. Martino refused to "CONCEDE"... and now...

A courageous NUN has even spoken out and left the Diocese of Scranton...

    • "By vow, we obey lawful authority. But we neither accept nor lock-step to abuse of power, which is a breach of the cardinal virtue of justice."
Sister Regina Werntz in a letter to the Citizens' Voice upon her decision to resign rather than have to sign a pledge stating she, a religious SISTER, is a good PRACTICING CATHOLIC!

There is NO MORE PITTSTON AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

All faithful wanted to believe in the sincerity - and wisdom - of Bishop Martino of Scranton in
2004 when he refused "to concede" to the parents and childrens' pleas to not close St. John the Baptist in Pittston and St. Mary's School in Avoca, the two main feeder schools for Seton Catholic in Pittston. He said this painful move would "strengthen" the remaining Catholic schools in the Region 7 (Pittston Area) Catholic school system.

Unfortunately our leader let us down. Just as we feared, there is NO more Pittston area Catholic school system. Three of our grade schools and our much needed high school - Seton Catholic of Pittston - are now gone. The same can be said of the Hazleton Catholic school system, the Williamsport Catholic school system, and so on and so forth throughout the Scranton Diocese.
After St. Mary's Avoca and SJB Pittston closed in 2004, the rumors that Seton Catholic ran rampant and UNCHECKED by the Diocese despite pleas from us and others for the Bishop to make a clear and definitive official statement to the contrary. The statement never came despite Bishop Martino's own admission of how the "power of the rumor" was very strong here in Wyoming Valley.

The rumors lead to the weakening of - but by no means the destruction of - Seton Catholic in Pittston. Still, Bishop Martino used the inevitable decline in enrollment as the final excuse to finish off this much needed Catholic high school.

Once there were 7 schools in Region 7: 6 Catholic elementary and one Catholic high school. Now there are three, with only 1 in Pittston. Names of the remaining Catholc schools are in green, and the blue are the closed schools'. The links of the closed schools lead to pages we've created for them. News of the last days, with photos of the students who last attended those wonderful Catholic grade schools, are available. Otherwise links lead to the official sites of the remaining Catholic schools.
An explanation of what happened to each Pittston Area Catholic School is offered.

2004: BM closed the two main feeder schools. We begged for him to reconsider. He would "NOT CONCEDE." Rumors of Seton's demise began and were allowed to run rampant until enrollment dwindled.
Shortly after the last day of school, Seton Catholic's official web site was quickly REMOVED from the internet - like the school, one of the oldest in the Wyoming Valley, never existed.
The above link is to a page we created.

(Registration reopened for 2008-2009 school year)
Students from the nearby Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Dupont, and St. Mary's Old Forge, both CLOSED by Bishop Martino's decision in JUNE 2007, were NOT allowed - by edict of the Diocese - to register at this school.
Run by Kathleen Gilmartin, a MUCH loved principal, and spiritually guided by the dedicated Rev. Charles Rokosz, the school has a tremendous academic reputation. Support from the community is outstanding. Thank God this school was spared.

St. Mary's Assumption was allowed to remain opened in 2004 when SJB and SMA closed, but that didn't help Seton: by tradition, most St. Mary's Assumption students either went to Scranton Prep or to Bishop Hoban after graduation.

    Meitler: ALLOWED TO REMAIN OPEN
A nice Catholic elementary school. WAC's enrollment was boosted by the closing of SJB in Pittston in 2004 when nearly 100 students from SJB flocked there. WAC was allowed to take students from Sacred Heart of Jesus in Dupont when it was closed by Bishop Martino in 2007 even tho it is several miles away and Holy Rosary Duryea, about 1.5 miles away, was not allowed to accept SHOJS Dupont students.
Many wondered if Bishop Martino's strategy may have been to, once again, funnel students from yet another CLOSED Scranton Diocese - Pittston Area Catholic grade school to WAC to help with the
    alleged huge mortgage?

DUPONT PA: Small community, BIG hearts
CLOSED by Scranton's Bishop Martino - June 2007

The loss of SHOJS Dupont leaves such a hole in Dupont's Catholic community. The parishoners of Sacred Heart, along with the big-hearted of Dupont and nearby communities, came out in DROVES to support this school in its fundraising efforts. Money was NOT an issue with this school.
SHOJS in Dupont was run by a loving principal, Ms. Paddock-Kaminski, dedicated teachers, a great priest (Father Verespy).
In the last year Sacred Heart opened a preschool program, and AFTER school program, began a girls' basketball team, and started a hot lunch program in supreme efforts to stave off any attempt to close the school. They were successful, but the ax fell anyway.
When this Catholic grade school closed, students were NOT ALLOWED to register at nearby Holy Rosary Duryea.

St. John the Baptist Elementary School
    Pittston PA

Beloved Principal: Robert Kaluzavich, coined the name LeaveNoCatholicStudentBehind.com
CLOSED by Bishop Martino - June 2004
This school, on William St. in Pittston, was not only directly across the street from Seton Catholic but was THE MAJOR feeder school for Seton Catholic High School. The old building was used as an excuse for closing. WHY weren't the students allowed to move to Seton? WHY was the government loan to turn Gabriel House - right across the street - into a recovery house and shelter for, among other things, former crack addicts secured 4 months before the "decision" to close SJB?
Yes, we have compassion for those in need. But the children must come first.
The former SJB kindergarten/first grade bldg. is now a pizza parlor...the desks and other items sold off in a GARAGE SALE, the gym has been leased to Pittston's YMCA (like the Seton Catholic Gymnasium) and the CHURCH will close in 2008.

    St. Mary's School
    AVOCA PA

    Avoca's Pride and Joy
CLOSED by Bishop Joseph F. Martino June 2004
This school was the 2nd MAJOR feeder school for Seton Catholic Pittston.
The Catholic grade school, through tremendous work, community support and fundraising efforts, had solved financial and enrollment problems and was growing stronger every year when the decision came down to shutter this beloved school in June 2004.
St. Mary's School in Avoca was the other main FEEDER school for Seton Catholic High School in Pittston, a fact known by Bishop Martino. He closed it despite pleas to allow it to merge with SJB in Pittston, the other Seton feeder school.
The diocese recently tried to turn the St. Mary's Avoca building into a drug rehab by leasing it out.

    JUNE 2007
We were driving up William Street in Pittston this past Friday (June 8th) and saw some teens in the parking lot of our beloved Seton Catholic High School. Excitedly, we went home to get our daughter to see what might be going outside the school.

When we got back, no one was there, but this sign was placed on the side of the Seton Catholic Gym...
(Photos by Therese, Seton Almost Class of 2014
Others stopped their cars and took photos, as well.)

UPDATE - WHAT HAPPENED IS DISGRACEFUL AND SAD!

The Class of 2008 went to the parking lot to have a tailgate party on the last day - EVER - of school at Seton Catholic. The sign was made by a girl in that class. The kids, who had already set up tables, were CHASED from the lot by two school officials. On the last day of a school with a history of nearly 150 years...why not let the kids have FUN and lots of it?

    This is UNBELIEVABLE.

These kids need to choose how they want to seek CLOSURE.

Don't look for the official Seton Catholic High School web site to offer any comfort or explanations...it appears to be CLOSED DOWN already. Scroll down and look under "Official" sites. This is what it looks like on GOOGLE's last cache, June 3rd...Seton Catholic on Google June 3, 2007

Seton Catholic High School in Pittston: Class of 2008
Seton Catholic High School Almost Class of 2008 sign placed on the school closed by Bishop Joseph F. Martino in his plan to

WHY are we still here if most of the Catholic schools in Pittston Area are gone...

Perhaps how we feel is best summed up in the closing speech from the 1982 film, THE VERDICT.

"So much of the time we’re just lost. We say, “Please God, tell us what is right — tell us what is true. When there is no justice, the rich win, and the poor are powerless.”

We become tired of hearing people lie — and after a time we become dead — a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims and we become victims. We become — we become weak. We doubt ourselves. We doubt our beliefs. We doubt our institutions and . . . we doubt the law. But today, you are the law. You are the law. Not some book. Not the lawyers. Not a marble statue or the trappings of the court. Those are just symbols of our desire to be just. They are, in fact, a prayer — a fervent and a frightened prayer. In my religion, they say act as if ye had faith, and faith will be given to you. If we are to have faith and justice, we only need to believe in ourselves and act with justice. See . . . I believe there is justice in our hearts."

The "we" in the above speech refers to anyone and everyone who believes in the preservaton - and the better word now might be "resurrection" - of Catholic education..

The webmaster of this site may not always be updating on a DAILY basis, but we WILL BE UPDATING on a very REGULAR basis! Some ask why we bother....

The Bishop of Scranton's Strategic Plan?
So many faithful feared that the closing of two Catholic Elementary Schools - St. John the Baptist in Pittston and St. Mary's School in Avoca - would cause the eventual demise of Seton Catholic High School in Pittston. We were correct.
Rumors about Seton's future demise, which began even when the enrollment at Seton was still healthy (but about the same time as the installment of Biship Martino) gained momentum after the two main FEEDER schools were shuttered in June 2004. These rumors gained steam and were left unchecked by the Diocese of Scranton despite pleas from nearly everyone concerned for an official denial about Seton's impending closing. WHY?

This web site even created a special STOMP THE RUMORS section!

So many of us rightfully predicted Bishop Martino would close churches ONLY AFTER the Catholic schools were safely gone. Otherwise how could he justify not using the money saved from the dozens and dozens of closed churches to SAVE the schools?
Yes, the schools HAD to go first.

We know some churches had to close. The priest shortage and the work overload on our aging priest population has necessitated this desperate measure. But all the money which will now be saved - and generated - by closed Catholic churches could have sustained our parochial schools. The combined parishes would have breathed new life into our schools, as well.

The schools HAD to go first if they were to go at all...

NOW the TEACHERS are under attack by the Diocese of Scranton.

Perhaps it is because our Catholic education taught us to believe in MIRACLES that we stay here.

We refuse to believe that Seton Catholic High School and the Pittston area Catholic school system will remain gone. The schools are gone, but the NEED IS STILL THERE and will remain there as long as there are Catholic school children in public schools not because they want to be, or because their parents want them to be, but because it is the only viable option available for them.

We know many may think we are foolish for keeping this site here. Perhaps we are. But we are encouraged because many have thanked us for keeping this site going for the past 4 years. Thank you for believing. We also know we have many silent supporters.

    Money before Children???

Dear God, what is Diocese of Scranton Bishop Joseph F. Martino thinking?

The Diocese of Scranton Enters Real Estate Business...
Many of the schools closed by Bishop Martino will probably be turned into very profitable government-funded low-income apartments, half-way houses, etc. This appears to be the very profitable trend.
