We are not associated with, speak for, nor do we represent the Diocese of Scranton, any Catholic School or Bishop Joseph F. Martino Our mission is to serve the Catholic Schools and the children, parents, supporters and teachers who love them. Catholic schools are closing at a time when the need for Catholic education is greatest, not just on a spirutual level, but on a LOCAL level! If you live in the Pittston Area School District, and your child goes to Holy Redeemer, the ONLY Catholic High School available (between Hazleton and Scranton), can you afford the GAS, in addition to the increased TUITION, to drive them to Scranton or Wilkes-Barre for after-school & weekend practices, sports and actitivies? Is there room for ALL the children to participate in the extras at these LARGER regional schools?

“I congratulate the DeNaples family,” Martino said. “I don’t know what I’d do without the assistance I receive from this wonderful family.”
Both Louis DeNaples and Father Joseph Sica attended the dedication ceremony of the the elegant structure. Both men are facing perjury charges for allegedly lying to the state gaming board. Mr. DeNaples is accused of not being truthful regarding his ties to organized crime figures. Rev. Sica is accused of misrepresenting his relationship with reputed mob boss Russell Bufalino, who attended Rev. Sica's ordination.

Bishop Martino, Ask the Bishop May 2004, regarding his decision to close St. John Baptist School Pittston and St. Mary's Avoca
- Bishop Joseph F. Martino, Ask The Bishop Live ( May 2004 ) defending his decision to close St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Pittston and St. Mary's School in Avoca - the two MAIN FEEDER SCHOOLS FOR THE NOW CLOSED SETON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL in Pittston PA
April 2004 ASK THE BISHOPBishop Martino, if you KNEW the power of the rumor, why did you do NOTHING to stop the rumors about SETON CATHOLIC's closing which began with YOUR arrival in the Diocese of Scranton?
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HEALTHY PITTSTON AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM YOU PREDICTED?
Bishop Martino - Ask the Bishop - May 2004 - regarding the repercussions after his "hard" decision to close SJB and SMA - the two main FEEDER schools of the now CLOSED Seton Catholic in Pittston.
The Bishop has artfully avoided answering to the common people, and continues to mostly hide in his ivory tower in Scranton.
Who REALLY took it on the chin? THE CHILDREN!

But Bishop Joseph F. Martino refused to "CONCEDE"... and now...

Remember, the CHILDRENare the future of our Catholic faith...
There is NO MORE PITTSTON AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM Official and UNOFFICIAL School Page Links Region 7 Schools of the Diocese of Scranton ..and then there were 3 All faithful wanted to believe in the sincerity - and wisdom - of Bishop Martino of Scranton in 2004 when he refused "to concede" to the parents and childrens' pleas to not close St. John the Baptist in Pittston and St. Mary's School in Avoca, the two main feeder schools for Seton Catholic in Pittston. He said this painful move would "strengthen" the remaining Catholic schools in the Region 7 (Pittston Area) Catholic school system.
Unfortunately our leader let us down. Just as we feared, there is NO more Pittston area Catholic school system. Three of our grade schools and our much needed high school - Seton Catholic of Pittston - are now gone. The same can be said of the Hazleton Catholic school system, the Williamsport Catholic school system, and so on and so forth throughout the Scranton Diocese.
The rumors lead to the weakening of - but by no means the destruction of - Seton Catholic in Pittston. Still, Bishop Martino used the inevitable decline in enrollment as the final excuse to finish off this much needed Catholic high school.
Once there were 7 schools in Region 7: 6 Catholic elementary and one Catholic high school. Now there are three, with only 1 in Pittston. Names of the remaining Catholc schools are in green, and the blue are the closed schools'. The links of the closed schools lead to pages we've created for them. News of the last days, with photos of the students who last attended those wonderful Catholic grade schools, are available. Otherwise links lead to the official sites of the remaining Catholic schools.
When we got back, no one was there, but this sign was placed on the side of the Seton Catholic Gym...
UPDATE - WHAT HAPPENED IS DISGRACEFUL AND SAD!
The Class of 2008 went to the parking lot to have a tailgate party on the last day - EVER - of school at Seton Catholic. The sign was made by a girl in that class. The kids, who had already set up tables, were CHASED from the lot by two school officials. On the last day of a school with a history of nearly 150 years...why not let the kids have FUN and lots of it?
This is UNBELIEVABLE.
These kids need to choose how they want to seek CLOSURE.
Don't look for the official Seton Catholic High School web site to offer any comfort or explanations...it appears to be CLOSED DOWN already. Scroll down and look under "Official" sites. This is what it looks like on GOOGLE's last cache, June 3rd...Seton Catholic on Google June 3, 2007
"So much of the time we’re just lost. We say, “Please God, tell us what is right — tell us what is true. When there is no justice, the rich win, and the poor are powerless.”
We become tired of hearing people lie — and after a time we become dead — a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims and we become victims. We become — we become weak. We doubt ourselves. We doubt our beliefs. We doubt our institutions and . . . we doubt the law. But today, you are the law. You are the law. Not some book. Not the lawyers. Not a marble statue or the trappings of the court. Those are just symbols of our desire to be just. They are, in fact, a prayer — a fervent and a frightened prayer. In my religion, they say act as if ye had faith, and faith will be given to you. If we are to have faith and justice, we only need to believe in ourselves and act with justice. See . . . I believe there is justice in our hearts."
The "we" in the above speech refers to anyone and everyone who believes in the preservaton - and the better word now might be "resurrection" - of Catholic education..
The webmaster of this site may not always be updating on a DAILY basis, but we WILL BE UPDATING on a very REGULAR basis! Some ask why we bother....
The Bishop of Scranton's Strategic Plan?
This web site even created a special STOMP THE RUMORS section!
So many of us rightfully predicted Bishop Martino would close churches ONLY AFTER the Catholic schools were safely gone. Otherwise how could he justify not using the money saved from the dozens and dozens of closed churches to SAVE the schools?
We know some churches had to close. The priest shortage and the work overload on our aging priest population has necessitated this desperate measure. But all the money which will now be saved - and generated - by closed Catholic churches could have sustained our parochial schools. The combined parishes would have breathed new life into our schools, as well.
The schools HAD to go first if they were to go at all...
NOW the TEACHERS are under attack by the Diocese of Scranton.
Perhaps it is because our Catholic education taught us to believe in MIRACLES that we stay here.
We refuse to believe that Seton Catholic High School and the Pittston area Catholic school system will remain gone. The schools are gone, but the NEED IS STILL THERE and will remain there as long as there are Catholic school children in public schools not because they want to be, or because their parents want them to be, but because it is the only viable option available for them.
We know many may think we are foolish for keeping this site here. Perhaps we are. But we are encouraged because many have thanked us for keeping this site going for the past 4 years. Thank you for believing. We also know we have many silent supporters.
